Ingredients:

Ingredients Quantity
Refrigerated biscuit dough (16.3 oz can) 1 can
Ground breakfast sausage (1 pound) 1 pound
All-purpose flour (for roux) 3 tablespoons
Milk 2 and 1/2 cups
Black pepper 1/2 teaspoon
Salt 1/4 teaspoon
Shredded cheddar cheese (optional) 1 cup (optional)
Fresh parsley, chopped (optional garnish) As needed (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat and Prepare: Preheat your oven to 375°F and lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Brown the Sausage: In a large skillet, brown the sausage over medium-high heat, crumbling it as you go. Once cooked, evenly distribute the sausage in the baking dish.
  3. Make the Roux: In the same skillet, retain 2 tablespoons of sausage grease. Sprinkle flour over the grease and whisk to make a roux. Cook for about a minute.
  4. Create the Gravy: Gradually pour in the milk, whisking constantly to prevent lumps. Simmer until it thickens, then season with black pepper and salt. Pour the gravy over the sausage.
  5. Prepare the Biscuits: Separate the biscuit dough into individual biscuits, cut each into quarters, and scatter them on top of the gravy.
  6. Bake: Slide the dish into the oven and bake for approximately 25 minutes or until the biscuits turn golden brown. Add optional cheese 5 minutes before completion.
  7. Serve: Let the casserole sit for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley for a burst of color.
