🍞 Homemade Amish Sweet Bread

📝 Ingredients

Ingredient Amount
Water 2 cups
Granulated sugar ⅔ cup
Active dry yeast 1½ tbsp
Salt 1½ tsp
Vegetable oil ¼ cup
All-purpose flour 5½–6 cups

🍴 Instructions

  1. Heat water: In a saucepan, bring water to a boil, then cool to about 110°F.
  2. Add sugar & yeast: Stir in sugar until dissolved. Remove from heat, add yeast, and let bloom for 10 minutes.
  3. Mix base: Stir in salt and oil.
  4. Add flour gradually: One cup at a time, beat flour into wet ingredients until dough forms a sticky ball that pulls away from the beaters.
  5. Knead: Turn dough onto a floured surface. Knead for 5 minutes, sprinkling with flour as needed to prevent sticking.
  6. First rise: Place dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm spot for 1 hour.
  7. Shape loaves: Punch down dough, divide in half, and place into two greased loaf pans. Cover and let rise again for 30 minutes.
  8. Bake: Preheat oven to 350°F. Bake loaves for 30 minutes, until golden and cooked through.
  9. Cool & serve: Remove from pans, let cool slightly, and slice into warm, fluffy bread.

💡 Tip: This bread is perfect with butter and jam, or toasted for breakfast. It also makes excellent sandwiches with its soft crumb and lightly sweet flavor.
