Ingredients:
Ingredients | Quantity |
---|---|
Refrigerated biscuit dough | 1 can (16.3 oz) |
Ground breakfast sausage | 1 pound |
All-purpose flour | 3 tablespoons |
Milk | 2 and 1/2 cups |
Black pepper | 1/2 teaspoon |
Salt | 1/4 teaspoon |
Shredded cheddar cheese (optional) | 1 cup |
Fresh parsley, chopped (optional) | As needed for garnish |
Instructions:
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F and lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
- Cook Sausage: Brown the ground breakfast sausage in a large skillet over medium-high heat until thoroughly cooked, breaking it into crumbles. Scatter the cooked sausage evenly in the baking dish.
- Make Roux: In the same skillet, keep about 2 tablespoons of sausage grease. Sprinkle the all-purpose flour over the grease and whisk it together to make a roux. Cook for about a minute to eliminate the floury taste.
- Prepare Gravy: Gradually pour in the milk, whisking constantly to prevent lumps. Bring the mixture to a simmer and continue whisking until it thickens into a gravy.
- Season Gravy: Season the gravy with black pepper and salt, give it a final good stir, and then pour it over the sausage in the baking dish.
- Prep Biscuits: Separate the refrigerated biscuit dough into individual biscuits, then cut each biscuit into quarters.
- Arrange Biscuits: Scatter the biscuit pieces on top of the gravy in the baking dish.
- Bake: Slide the dish into the preheated oven and bake for about 25 minutes or until the biscuits are golden brown.
- Optional Cheese: If using shredded cheddar cheese, sprinkle it over the top 5 minutes before the casserole is done.
- Let It Rest: Allow the casserole to sit for a few minutes before serving.
- Garnish (Optional): Garnish with chopped fresh parsley for a pop of color.
