If you grew up in Detroit, chances are you’ve crossed paths with Bumpy Cake—a true hometown classic. First made famous by Sanders in the early 1900s, this cake is instantly recognizable thanks to its signature rows of buttercream “bumps” hidden beneath a glossy layer of chocolate fudge icing. For many Michiganders, it’s more than dessert—it’s pure nostalgia.

At its core, Bumpy Cake is a simple chocolate cake elevated by clever technique. A rich devil’s food base sets the stage, while chilled buttercream lines create the iconic bumps. The magic happens when warm fudge icing is poured over, flowing around the buttercream without melting it, then setting into that unmistakable finish.

Perfect for birthdays, potlucks, or holiday tables, this cake slices beautifully, feeds a crowd, and delivers big chocolate flavor without fuss. More than just a treat, it’s a piece of Detroit’s culinary heritage—still as beloved today as it was generations ago.
