Ingredient | Description |
---|---|
Milk | Choose high-quality milk, such as cow’s milk, goat’s milk, or even plant-based milk like almond or soy milk. |
Vinegar | White vinegar or apple cider vinegar can be used to curdle the milk and separate the curds from the whey. |
Salt (Optional) | Adding salt to the cheese can enhance its flavor and help preserve it. |
Instructions:
- Heat the Milk: Pour your choice of high-quality milk into a saucepan and heat it over medium heat until it starts to gently simmer. Stir occasionally to prevent scorching.
- Add Vinegar: Once the milk is simmering, remove it from the heat and slowly pour in either white vinegar or apple cider vinegar while stirring gently. You should see the milk start to curdle, separating into curds (solids) and whey (liquid).
- Strain the Curds: Place a cheesecloth-lined sieve or colander over a large bowl, and carefully pour the curdled milk mixture into it. Let the whey drain off, leaving behind the curds in the cheesecloth.
- Press the Cheese (Optional): If you want firmer cheese, gather the edges of the cheesecloth and twist them to form a bundle. Place a weight, like a heavy can or pot, on top of the bundle and let it sit for 10-15 minutes to press out excess moisture.
- Season with Salt (Optional): If desired, sprinkle salt over the cheese and gently mix it in to enhance the flavor.
- Shape and Serve: Unwrap the cheesecloth and shape the cheese into a ball, log, or any desired shape. Your homemade cheese is now ready to be enjoyed!
