3-Ingredient Pan-Fried Halloumi

This 3-Ingredient Pan-Fried Halloumi is the ultimate “low effort, high reward” appetizer. Often called “squeaky cheese,” halloumi has a remarkably high melting point, which allows you to get a deep, caramelized crust on the outside while the inside becomes soft and warm. It is the perfect salty addition to a Mediterranean platter or a protein-packed snack on its own.

3-Ingredient Pan-Fried Halloumi:

Ingredients:

Ingredient Amount
Halloumi cheese (sliced 1/2-inch thick) 8 oz
Olive oil (or butter) 1 tablespoon
Dried oregano (or fresh thyme) 1/2 teaspoon

How to Make Pan-Fried Halloumi

Step 1: Prep the Cheese: Remove the halloumi from its brine and slice it into 1/2-inch thick pieces.

Tip: Pat the slices very dry with paper towels. Any surface moisture will create steam in the pan, which prevents that beautiful golden crust from forming and causes the oil to splatter.

Step 2: Heat the Pan: Add the olive oil (or butter if you want a richer, nuttier flavor) to a non-stick skillet. Heat over medium until the oil is shimmering but not smoking.

Step 3: Fry to Gold: Lay the cheese slices in the pan in a single layer. Let them cook undisturbed for 2/3 minutes. Once the bottom is a deep golden brown and slightly crispy, flip them over.

Step 4: Season: Immediately after flipping, sprinkle your dried oregano or fresh thyme over the hot cheese. The heat will release the oils in the herbs, making them incredibly fragrant. Fry for another 2/3 minutes on the second side.

Step 5: Serve Hot: Transfer the slices to a plate and serve immediately. Halloumi is best eaten while it’s still hot and soft; as it cools, it regains its firm, squeaky texture.
