Scottish farmer, Steve, prides himself on his small but productive dairy herd. One day, he noticed a concerning change – Lila, his highest milk producer, had stopped giving milk entirely. Vets confirmed Lila’s health, leaving Steve puzzled. He decided to keep a closer eye on her in the meadow bordering the forest.

Intriguingly, Steve observed Lila slipping away towards the forest edge each evening. Curiosity piqued, he decided to follow one night. Leading the cows to their usual grazing area near the forest, Steve kept a watchful eye on Lila. He noticed her lagging behind the herd and cautiously followed.

After a quiet stalk through the trees, Steve emerged into a secluded clearing. Lila stood a short distance away, seemingly guarding something. As Steve approached, he saw a sight that warmed his heart – a tiny calf nestled amongst the trees.

Realization dawned on Steve. Lila had likely hidden the calf weeks ago, perhaps feeling protective. The missing milk now made perfect sense. Every calf on the farm was separated from its mother shortly after birth, raised in isolation before joining a new herd.
