Instructions:
- Prep Oven & Sausage: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Brown the 1 pound of ground sausage in a skillet over medium heat, breaking it into small, even crumbles. This should take about 8-10 minutes. Transfer the cooked sausage to paper towels to drain, then allow it to cool completely.
- Make the Filling & Arrange Dough: In a mixing bowl, combine the cooled sausage with the 1 cup of grated Monterey Jack cheese and 1 cup of grated sharp cheddar cheese. Add the optional ½ teaspoon of garlic powder and ½ teaspoon of Italian seasoning if you are using them. Place an inverted 5-6 inch bowl in the center of your prepared baking sheet as a guide. Separate the crescent roll dough into triangles and arrange them in a circle around the bowl. The wide ends of the triangles should overlap at the bowl’s edge, and the points should extend outward.
- Assemble & Bake: Carefully remove the bowl from the center. Distribute the sausage and cheese mixture evenly around the ring on the wide portion of the dough. Fold each dough triangle point over the filling and tuck it underneath the inner edge of the dough to secure the filling. In a small bowl, whisk together the 1 large egg and 1 tablespoon of water. Brush this mixture generously over the entire dough surface of the ring. Bake for 20-22 minutes, or until the dough is a deep golden brown. Rotate the pan halfway through baking for even cooking.
- Cool & Serve: Allow the ring to cool for 5-7 minutes before carefully transferring it to a serving platter. Garnish with the 2 tablespoons of freshly chopped parsley and serve with your favorite dipping sauces.
Note: For a Mexican-inspired twist, try using chorizo sausage and pepper jack cheese. For an Italian version, use Italian sausage and mozzarella cheese.
