Known as Robert Redford Dessert (or sometimes “Better Than Robert Redford”), this layered classic became a potluck and church cookbook staple at the height of Redford’s fame. The name made sense: call the most irresistible dessert after the most irresistible man of the era. The trend may have faded, but the deliciousness hasn’t.

🧾 Ingredients

Ingredient Amount
All-purpose flour 1 cup
Unsalted butter, chopped ¾ cup
Walnuts, finely chopped 1 cup
Cream cheese 8 oz
Powdered sugar 1 cup
Frozen whipped topping, thawed 2 (8 oz) containers
Instant chocolate pudding mix 1 (5.1 oz) package
Instant vanilla pudding mix 1 (5.1 oz) package
Milk 3 cups
Semisweet chocolate, grated ⅛ cup

  1. Make the Crust
    Preheat oven to 350°F. Cut butter into flour using forks, a pastry cutter, or your fingers. Mix in walnuts. Press firmly into the bottom of a 9×13-inch pan. Bake 20–25 minutes until golden. Cool completely.
  2. Cream Cheese Layer
    Beat cream cheese and powdered sugar until smooth. Fold in one container of whipped topping. Spread over cooled crust.
  3. Pudding Layer
    Whisk chocolate and vanilla pudding mixes with milk until thickened. Spread over cream cheese layer.
  4. Final Layer
    Spread remaining whipped topping evenly over the pudding. Cover and chill at least 2 hours.
  5. Serve
    Garnish with grated chocolate before serving. Slice and enjoy this vintage favorite.
