How To Make Old-Fashioned Apple Dumplings

  1. Step 1: Prep & Preheat: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Butter a 9×13-inch baking pan and set it aside.
  2. Step 2: Prepare the Dumplings: Divide the pie crusts into 6 equal pieces and roll each into about a 7-inch square or circle, large enough to wrap around an apple. Place one peeled and cored apple on each piece of dough.
  3. Step 3: Fill the Apples: In a small bowl, whisk together the brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Divide the mixture between the apples, poking some into the cored opening and spreading the rest around the base of each apple. Place one slice of butter into the core opening of each apple.
  4. Step 4: Wrap the Dumplings: Fold the corners of the dough over the apple to create the dumpling, pinching the edges together to seal the dough completely around the apples. Transfer the finished dumplings to the prepared baking pan.
  5. Step 5: Make & Pour the Sauce: In a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, add all of the sauce ingredients (apple cider, brown sugar, butter, vanilla extract, and cinnamon). Bring the mixture to a low boil, stirring constantly until the sugar has dissolved. Cook for 1 minute longer, then remove from the heat. Let the sauce cool for 5 minutes, then carefully pour it evenly over the dumplings in the pan.
  6. Step 6: Bake & Serve: Bake for 50-55 minutes, or until the dumplings are golden brown and the apples are tender. Let them rest for 10 minutes after coming out of the oven. Serve the dumplings warm with ice cream and extra sauce spooned over the top.
