My dinner party guests always go nuts over this dish.

This comforting and hearty casserole features seasoned hamburger patties layered with potatoes, onions, and a creamy gravy, all topped with melted cheddar cheese. It’s a classic Amish dish perfect for a family dinner.

Amish Hamburger Steak Bake

Ingredients:

Ingredient Quantity
Ground Beef 1 1/2 pounds
Garlic Powder 1/2 teaspoon
Onion Powder 1/2 teaspoon
Salt To taste
Pepper To taste
Milk 2 cups, divided
All-Purpose Flour 1/4 cup
Russet Potatoes (medium) 4-5
Onion (medium) 1
Shredded Cheddar Cheese 1 cup

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius) and lightly grease a 9×13 inch (23×33 cm) baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, season the ground beef with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly and form into 6 patties.
  3. In a skillet over medium heat, cook the patties until browned on both sides. They don’t need to be fully cooked at this point. Set the patties aside.
  4. In the same skillet, whisk together 1 cup of milk with the flour until smooth. Gradually add the remaining 1 cup of milk, stirring continuously until a gravy forms. Season with additional salt and pepper if needed.
  5. Arrange half of the thinly sliced potatoes at the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Layer half of the thinly sliced onions on top of the potatoes.
  6. Place the browned hamburger patties over the onions. Cover the patties with the remaining sliced potatoes and then the remaining sliced onions.
  7. Pour the prepared gravy evenly over the entire dish.
  8. Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake for 1 hour.
  9. After 1 hour, remove the aluminum foil. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top of the casserole.
  10. Bake uncovered for an additional 15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and lightly golden.
  11. Let stand for 5-10 minutes before serving.
