Ingredients:

Ingredient Quantity
Lean ground beef 1 lb
Small onion (chopped) 1
Cream of mushroom soup 1 (10.5 oz) can
Milk 1/2 cup
Garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon
Dried thyme 1/2 teaspoon
Mushrooms (drained) 1 (4 oz) can
Macaroni (uncooked) 2 cups
Sharp cheddar cheese (grated) 2 cups
Kosher salt To taste
Freshly ground black pepper To taste

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven and prepare dish: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 2-quart casserole dish with butter or nonstick cooking spray. Set aside.
  2. Cook macaroni: Cook the macaroni according to package directions, but for 1 to 2 minutes less than the recommended cooking time. Drain the macaroni well and set it aside.
  3. Brown the beef and onions: In a large skillet over medium heat, add the lean ground beef and chopped onion. Season the beef with garlic powder, dried thyme, kosher salt, and freshly ground black pepper. Cook, breaking up the beef with a spoon, until it is browned and cooked through and the onions are tender. Drain off any excess grease from the skillet.
  4. Make the sauce: Stir in the can of cream of mushroom soup, milk, and drained mushrooms into the skillet with the cooked ground beef and onions. Season the sauce to taste with additional kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper if needed.
  5. Layer the casserole: Arrange half of the meat and mushroom mixture in the bottom of the prepared casserole dish, spreading it evenly. Layer half of the slightly undercooked macaroni over the meat mixture, followed by half of the grated sharp cheddar cheese.
  6. Repeat layers: Layer the remaining half of the meat and mushroom mixture over the macaroni, and then top with the remaining half of the uncooked macaroni.
  7. Bake uncovered: Bake the casserole uncovered in the preheated oven for 20 minutes.
  8. Add cheese topping and finish baking: Remove the casserole from the oven and sprinkle the remaining 1 cup of grated sharp cheddar cheese evenly over the top. Return the casserole to the oven and bake for an additional 10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and golden brown.
  9. Serve: Let the Hamburger Supreme Casserole cool slightly before serving. Enjoy this comforting and cheesy meal!
