Growing up, this was my favorite. I’d constantly pester my mom to cook it.

This hearty and comforting dish combines the flavors of classic French onion soup with the versatility of rice. The caramelized onions, rich broth, and melted Gruyère cheese create a satisfying and flavorful meal.

Ingredients:

Ingredient Quantity
Long-Grain White Rice 1 cup
Onions (thinly sliced) 2 large
Beef Broth 3 cups
Butter 2 tablespoons
Olive Oil 1 tablespoon
Sugar 1 teaspoon
Salt 1 teaspoon
Black Pepper 1/2 teaspoon
Shredded Gruyère Cheese 1 cup

Instructions:

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Caramelize Onions: In a large skillet, heat butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add thinly sliced onions and sugar. Cook, stirring occasionally, until onions are golden brown and caramelized (about 15-20 minutes).
  3. Prepare Rice: Spread uncooked rice evenly in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
  4. Combine Broth and Onions: Add beef broth, salt, and pepper to the skillet with caramelized onions. Stir well, bring to a gentle simmer.
  5. Pour Over Rice: Pour onion and broth mixture over the rice in the baking dish, ensuring rice is evenly covered.
  6. Bake Covered: Cover baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in preheated oven for 30 minutes.
  7. Add Cheese and Bake Uncovered: Remove foil, sprinkle Gruyère cheese over the top, and return to oven. Bake uncovered for 15 minutes, or until cheese is melted and bubbly.
  8. Serve: Let dish sit for a few minutes before serving to allow flavors to meld together.
