Simon Cowell is a very famous person in the entertainment world. He is known for his work as a music producer and for being a judge on popular TV shows like America’s Got Talent and The X Factor. He has made a lot of money and is a big name in many homes. But in 2020, something scary happened to him.

While he was riding a new electric bike at his home in Malibu, California, he had a terrible accident. The bike suddenly flipped up on its back wheel, throwing him into the air. He fell hard on his back. As soon as he hit the ground, he knew something was very wrong. “I knew I’d broken my back the minute I hit the ground,” Cowell said later.

The fall caused a bad injury to his spine. He had to have a serious surgery that lasted six hours. Doctors put a metal rod in his back. The situation was so serious that Cowell was worried he might never walk again.

Right after the accident, Cowell sent a message on social media. It was a funny message where he thanked his fans and joked about needing to “read the manual” for the electric bike. But things were not a joke behind the scenes. In later talks, he shared that when he saw the X-ray of his back, he saw how close he was to not being able to walk at all. “The doctor said, ‘I’m not going to lie. You may not walk again,'” Cowell remembered.

Doctors told him he needed to stay still and rest. But Cowell is known for being determined and a bit stubborn. Just two days after his surgery, he was walking, even though the doctors told him not to. “I just couldn’t lie there. I needed to move, even if I had to be carried,” he said. The process of getting better was long, painful, and very hard on his feelings.

One of the hardest parts for Simon was going home and seeing his son, Eric. He felt bad about how he looked and moved after the surgery. “I came back looking like I was 100 years old,” he said. But his son’s reaction was sweet and innocent, and it made him feel much better. Eric told his dad, “Daddy, you’re like Ironman,” because of the metal rods in his back.

It took Cowell almost a year to fully recover. During that time, he felt helpless and was in a lot of pain. “I’ve never felt anything like it. You can’t move, you can’t do anything on your own. But I promised myself I’d come back stronger—and I did,” Cowell said.

Looking back, Cowell says the accident was a scary experience, but it also had a good side. “I’ve got to be honest, breaking my back wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. It forced me to exercise and get into better shape. I actually feel healthier now than I did before the accident,” he told People magazine. With his usual funny style, he even joked, “If you want to feel better, break your back!”

Cowell is now fully healthy and is back to his busy work schedule, including being on America’s Got Talent. Even after everything he went through, he says the experience taught him a very important lesson: “Your health and your family are what really matter. Don’t take risks that aren’t worth it.”
