Ingredients:

Ingredient Quantity
Ground beef 1 pound
Garlic powder 1 teaspoon
Onion powder 1 teaspoon
Salt 1 teaspoon
Black pepper ½ teaspoon
Dried thyme ½ teaspoon
Olive oil 2 tablespoons
Sliced mushrooms 1 cup
All-purpose flour 2 tablespoons
Milk 1 ½ cups
Medium potatoes, thinly sliced 4
Large onion, thinly sliced 1
Shredded Cheddar cheese 1 cup

How To Make Amish Hamburger Steak Bake:

  1. Step 1: Prep Patties & Brown: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). In a large bowl, mix the ground beef with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, and thyme. Form the mixture into 4 patties. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Brown the patties on both sides, about 3-4 minutes per side. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
  2. Step 2: Make the Gravy: In the same skillet, add the sliced mushrooms and cook until they are soft. Sprinkle the flour over the mushrooms and stir to combine. Gradually whisk in the milk, cooking until the mixture thickens into a gravy.
  3. Step 3: Layer the Casserole: Layer the thinly sliced potatoes and onions in a greased baking dish. Place the browned patties on top of the potato and onion layer. Pour the mushroom gravy over the entire dish, ensuring everything is well coated.
  4. Step 4: Bake: Cover the dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove the foil, sprinkle the Cheddar cheese over the top, and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
