Salisbury steak is one of those timeless Midwestern comfort foods—like a hamburger dressed up for Sunday dinner. It’s budget-friendly, made from simple pantry staples, and perfect for nights when you’re juggling a dozen things but still want a hearty, homemade meal.

Tender beef patties simmer in a rich onion-and-mushroom gravy, begging to be served over mashed potatoes, buttered noodles, or rice. Add a green side—like roasted broccoli, steamed beans, or a crisp salad—and you’ve got a balanced plate. For full comfort-food mode, warm dinner rolls or crusty bread are perfect for mopping up the extra sauce. Leftovers reheat beautifully, making this dish ideal for meal prep.

Egg 1 large
Milk ¼ cup
Worcestershire sauce 1 tbsp (divided)
Onion powder 1 tsp
Garlic powder 1 tsp
Dried thyme (optional) ½ tsp
Salt ½ tsp
Black pepper ½ tsp
Olive or vegetable oil 1 tbsp (for searing, optional)
Onion, thinly sliced 1 small
Mushrooms, sliced 1 cup
Butter 2 tbsp
All-purpose flour 2 tbsp
Beef broth 2 cups
Ketchup 1 tbsp
Dijon or yellow mustard 1 tsp
Additional salt & pepper To taste
Cooking spray or oil For greasing dish

Directions

1. Preheat Oven

  • Heat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.

2. Make Patties

  • In a bowl, combine beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, 2 tsp Worcestershire, onion powder, garlic powder, thyme, salt, and pepper.
  • Mix gently until just combined.
  • Shape into 4 oval patties (about ¾-inch thick). Chill briefly if desired.

3. Sear (Optional)

  • Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high.
  • Brown patties 2–3 minutes per side. Transfer to baking dish.

4. Make Gravy

  • In the same skillet, melt butter. Add onion and mushrooms; cook 4–6 minutes until softened.
  • Sprinkle flour over mixture; stir and cook 1 minute.
  • Slowly whisk in broth. Add remaining Worcestershire, ketchup, and mustard.
  • Simmer 3–5 minutes until slightly thickened. Season to taste.

5. Bake

  • Pour gravy over patties in baking dish.
  • Cover with foil and bake 20 minutes.
  • Remove foil and bake 10–15 minutes more, until patties reach 160°F (71°C) and gravy is bubbly.

6. Rest & Serve

  • Let rest 5 minutes.
  • Spoon extra gravy over patties and serve with your favorite sides.

Notes

  • Don’t overmix the beef—gentle handling keeps patties tender.
  • The gravy thickens further as it rests.
  • Works well for meal prep; reheats nicely with veggies or starches.
