Overnight Crème Brûlée French Toast

Ingredients:

Packed brown sugar 1 cup
Light corn syrup 2 tablespoons

Vanilla extract 1 teaspoon
Grand Marnier or orange liqueur 1 teaspoon (optional)
Salt 1/4 teaspoon

Challah or brioche bread 1 loaf, sliced 1/2 inch thick
Granulated sugar 1/4 cup (optional, for caramelizing)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare caramel base: Melt butter, brown sugar, and corn syrup in a saucepan over medium heat until smooth. Pour into a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Arrange bread: Place bread slices in a single layer over the caramel base.
  3. Make custard: Whisk together eggs, half-and-half, vanilla, Grand Marnier (if using), and salt. Pour over bread.
  4. Refrigerate: Cover and refrigerate overnight or at least 8 hours.
  5. Bake: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake uncovered for 35-40 minutes or until golden brown.
  6. Caramelize (optional): Sprinkle sugar on top and caramelize with a kitchen torch.
  7. Serve: Let cool slightly before serving.
