INGREDIENTS AMOUNT
Ground beef 1 pound
Milk 1 cup
Cracker crumbs 1 cup
Salt 1 teaspoon
Black pepper 1/4 teaspoon
Small onion, finely chopped 1
Cream of mushroom soup 1 can (10/1/2 ounces)
Water or broth 1 can (10/1/2 ounces)
All-purpose flour For dredging

How To Make Amish Poor Man’s Steak:

Step 1: Mix and Chill: In a large bowl, mix together the 1 lb ground beef, 1 cup milk, 1 cup cracker crumbs, 1 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp pepper, and the chopped onion until well combined. Form the mixture into a compact loaf shape and place it on a plate or in a baking dish. Cover tightly and refrigerate overnight to allow the flavors to meld and the loaf to firm up.

Step 2: Slice and Coat: The next day, remove the beef loaf from the fridge. Slice it into 1/2-inch thick slices or patties. Lightly dredge or roll each beef slice in a small amount of all-purpose flour until coated.

Step 3: Brown the Beef: In a skillet over medium-high heat, pan-fry the beef slices until they are nicely browned on both sides. You do not need to cook them all the way through yet. Transfer the browned beef slices to a baking dish.

Step 4: Prepare the Gravy: In a separate bowl, whisk together the 10/1/2 oz can of cream of mushroom soup and 1 soup can (10/1/2 oz) of water or broth until the mixture is smooth.

Step 5: Bake: Pour the mushroom gravy evenly over the beef in the baking dish. Bake at 350F (175C) for 1 hour. The sauce should be bubbling and thickened, and the “steaks” should be hot and tender.

Step 6: Serve: Serve the Amish Poor Man’s Steak slices smothered in the hot gravy. This dish is traditionally served over a bed of mashed potatoes or wide egg noodles.
