Classic Creole Macaroni

Classic Creole Macaroni is the kind of hearty skillet dinner that turns simple pantry staples into something soulful and satisfying. Tender elbow macaroni is tossed with seasoned ground beef, tomatoes, onion, bell pepper, and a touch of Creole spice for a dish that’s savory, slightly spicy, and full of familiar Southern comfort.

It’s quick enough for a busy weeknight yet special enough for a casual family dinner or potluck. Everything comes together in one skillet, so cleanup is easy and the flavor payoff is big. The macaroni stretches the beef, the vegetables add depth, and the tomato-based sauce ties it all together.

Serve it hot straight from the skillet, topped with a sprinkle of shredded cheese if you like. A crisp green salad or warm cornbread makes the perfect companion.

Celery, finely diced 2 stalks
Garlic, minced 3 cloves
Diced tomatoes, undrained 1 can (14.5 oz / 411 g)
Tomato sauce 1 can (8 oz / 227 g)
Tomato paste 1 tbsp
Paprika 1 tsp
Dried oregano 1 tsp
Dried thyme 1 tsp
Creole seasoning ½ tsp, plus more to taste
Black pepper ¼ tsp
Salt ½ tsp, or to taste
Worcestershire sauce 1 tbsp
Shredded cheddar cheese 1 cup (120 g)
Olive oil 2 tbsp
Reserved pasta water ½ cup (120 ml), as needed
Fresh parsley, chopped 2 tbsp, for garnish

👩‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Cook the pasta: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook macaroni until just tender. Drain and set aside.
  2. Brown the beef: Heat olive oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high. Add ground beef and cook 5–7 minutes, breaking it apart. Drain excess grease if needed.
  3. Sauté the vegetables: Add onion, bell pepper, and celery. Cook 4–5 minutes until softened. Stir in garlic and cook 30 seconds.
  4. Build the sauce: Add diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, paprika, oregano, thyme, Creole seasoning, black pepper, salt, and Worcestershire. Stir well.
  5. Simmer: Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer uncovered 10–12 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add reserved pasta water if sauce is too thick.
  6. Combine: Stir in cooked macaroni until evenly coated with the Creole beef sauce.
  7. Add cheese: Sprinkle cheddar over the top. Cover for 2–3 minutes until melted.
  8. Serve: Garnish with parsley and serve hot.

This skillet supper is bold, comforting, and deeply Southern—perfect for when you want a filling meal without fuss.
