| Bacon slices (halved) | 10 |
| Yellow onion (finely diced) | 1 |
| Green bell pepper (finely diced) | 1/2 |
| Pork and beans | 1 can (54 oz) |
| Ketchup | 4 Tbsp |
| Molasses | 1/4 cup |
| Brown sugar | 2/3 cup |
| Cider vinegar | 1/4 cup |
| Dry mustard | 2 tsp |
How To Make Brown Sugar and Bacon Baked Beans:
- Step 1: Bacon Preparation: Cook 10 bacon slices halfway through (they should still be pliable). Set them aside to drain on a paper towel, but reserve 2 Tbsp of the bacon grease in a deep skillet.
- Step 2: Oven Preheating and Prep: Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F (160 degrees C) and set the rack to the lower-middle position. Lightly grease a 13×9 baking dish.
- Step 3: Sautéing Vegetables: Heat the 2 Tbsp bacon grease (or butter) in the deep skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onion and green pepper, sautéing for about 5 minutes until softened.
- Step 4: Mixing and Simmering: Add the 1 can (54 oz) pork and beans and all remaining ingredients: 4 Tbsp ketchup, 1/4 cup molasses, 2/3 cup brown sugar, 1/4 cup cider vinegar, and 2 tsp dry mustard. Stir well to combine. Let the mixture simmer for a minute or so.
- Step 5: Baking Time: Pour the bean mixture into the prepared baking dish. Lay the halved, cooked bacon slices on top. Bake for 2-3 hours, depending on your desired consistency (longer for thicker, more concentrated flavor).
- Step 6: Resting Period: Let the beans stand for 5 minutes before serving.
