Ingredients:

For the Crust: Quantity
Pre-made pie crust (unbaked) 1
For the Custard Filling: Quantity
Large eggs 3
Granulated sugar 1 cup
Salt 1/4 teaspoon
Whole milk (or half-and-half) 2 cups
Vanilla extract 1 teaspoon
Nutmeg Pinch (Optional)

How To Make Old-Fashioned Custard Pie:

  1. Step 1: Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Roll out the pie crust and gently press it into a 9-inch pie dish. Trim and crimp the edges as desired.
  2. Step 2: Prepare the Custard Filling: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the 3 eggs, 1 cup sugar, and 1/4 teaspoon salt until smooth and well combined. Gradually stir in the 2 cups milk, ensuring the mixture stays smooth. Mix in the 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.
  3. Step 3: Assemble the Pie: Pour the custard mixture into the prepared pie crust, filling it about 3/4 of the way to prevent overflow. Optional: Grate a light dusting of nutmeg over the top of the custard for a traditional touch.
  4. Step 4: Bake: Place the pie on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 45–55 minutes, or until the custard is set. To check for doneness, gently shake the pie—it should jiggle slightly in the center but not be liquidy. If the crust browns too quickly, cover the edges with aluminum foil.
  5. Step 5: Cool and Serve: Remove the pie from the oven and let it cool completely on a wire rack. Cooling allows the custard to fully set. Once cooled, slice into wedges and serve plain or with a dollop of whipped cream.
