Kansas City Crunch

Ingredients:

Ingredient Quantity
Rice or corn Chex cereal 4 cups
Rice Krispies cereal 2 cups
Fritos chips 2 cups
Cashews 1 cup
Butter 1 cup (2 sticks)
Granulated sugar 1 cup
Corn syrup ¾ cup
Cinnamon 2 teaspoons
Chili powder 1 teaspoon
Cayenne pepper ½-1 teaspoon
Salt ½ teaspoon
Baking soda ½ teaspoon
Optional: Colored sugar sprinkles As desired

Instructions:

  1. Prep & Combine Dry Ingredients: Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper and set it aside. In a very large bowl (or two separate bowls if needed), combine the 4 cups of Chex cereal, 2 cups of Rice Krispies, 2 cups of Fritos chips, and 1 cup of cashews.
  2. Make the Caramel Sauce: In a small saucepan, combine the 1 cup butter, 1 cup granulated sugar, ¾ cup corn syrup, 2 teaspoons cinnamon, 1 teaspoon chili powder, and ½ teaspoon salt. Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Let it simmer for 2-3 minutes. Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the ½ teaspoon baking soda. The mixture will fizz and expand, so be careful. Continue stirring until it’s well combined.
  3. Combine & Cool: Pour the hot caramel mixture over the cereal mixture and toss everything together until it’s evenly coated. Spread the mixture out onto the prepared baking sheet in a single, even layer. If you’re using sprinkles, sprinkle them over the mix now. Allow the mix to cool completely for at least 1 hour. The crunch will become crispy as it cools.
  4. Break & Store: Once cooled, break the Kansas City Crunch into bite-sized pieces. Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature.

Enjoy this deliciously sweet and savory snack!
