My dinner party guests always go nuts over this dish.

This comforting and hearty casserole features seasoned hamburger patties layered with potatoes, onions, and a creamy gravy, all topped with melted cheddar cheese. It’s a classic Amish dish perfect for a family dinner.

Ingredients:
Ingredient | Quantity |
---|---|
Ground Beef | 1 1/2 pounds |
Garlic Powder | 1/2 teaspoon |
Onion Powder | 1/2 teaspoon |
Salt | To taste |
Pepper | To taste |
Milk | 2 cups, divided |
All-Purpose Flour | 1/4 cup |
Russet Potatoes (medium) | 4-5 |
Onion (medium) | 1 |
Shredded Cheddar Cheese | 1 cup |
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius) and lightly grease a 9×13 inch (23×33 cm) baking dish.
- In a large bowl, season the ground beef with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly and form into 6 patties.
- In a skillet over medium heat, cook the patties until browned on both sides. They don’t need to be fully cooked at this point. Set the patties aside.
- In the same skillet, whisk together 1 cup of milk with the flour until smooth. Gradually add the remaining 1 cup of milk, stirring continuously until a gravy forms. Season with additional salt and pepper if needed.
- Arrange half of the thinly sliced potatoes at the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Layer half of the thinly sliced onions on top of the potatoes.
- Place the browned hamburger patties over the onions. Cover the patties with the remaining sliced potatoes and then the remaining sliced onions.
- Pour the prepared gravy evenly over the entire dish.
- Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake for 1 hour.
- After 1 hour, remove the aluminum foil. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top of the casserole.
- Bake uncovered for an additional 15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and lightly golden.
- Let stand for 5-10 minutes before serving.
