Ingredients:

Ingredient Quantity
Ground beef 1 1/2 pounds
Garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon
Onion powder 1/2 teaspoon
Salt and pepper To taste
Milk 2 cups
All-purpose flour 1/4 cup
Russet potatoes 4-5 medium, thinly sliced
Onion 1 medium, thinly sliced
Cheddar cheese 1 cup, shredded

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the beef: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish. In a large bowl, combine ground beef with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well and form into 6 patties.
  2. Brown the patties: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the patties until browned on both sides. They don’t need to be fully cooked at this point. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Make the gravy: In the same skillet, whisk together 1 cup of milk with the flour until smooth. Gradually add the remaining milk, whisking constantly, until a gravy forms. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  4. Layer the dish: Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in the prepared baking dish. Top with half of the sliced onions. Place the browned hamburger patties on top of the onions. Cover with the remaining potatoes and onions.
  5. Bake covered: Pour the prepared gravy evenly over the dish. Cover tightly with aluminum foil. Bake for 1 hour.
  6. Melt the cheese: Remove the foil, sprinkle with shredded cheddar cheese, and bake uncovered for an additional 15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
