Layer casserole pan with cabbage, but wait until this magic mixture comes on top

This easy-to-make cabbage roll casserole is a comforting and flavorful dish that captures the essence of traditional cabbage rolls without the hassle of wrapping individual leaves. The tender cabbage, savory ground beef, and creamy rice mixture combine to create a satisfying and hearty meal.

Ingredients:

Ingredient Quantity
Olive oil 1 tablespoon
Onion, chopped 1
Garlic, minced 3 cloves or 1 tablespoon
Italian seasoning 1 tablespoon
Ground beef 2 pounds
Tomato sauce 1 can (29 ounces)
Green cabbage, shredded 1 head
Uncooked rice 1 cup
Salt 1 teaspoon
Beef broth 3 cups
Coarse ground pepper 1 teaspoon
(Optional) Shredded mozzarella cheese As desired

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Sauté onion until soft, then add garlic, Italian seasoning, and ground beef. Cook until beef is browned and drained if necessary.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine tomato sauce, rice, salt, and half of the coarse ground pepper.
  4. In a casserole dish, layer one-third of the cabbage, then one-third of the ground beef, and finally one-third of the casserole mixture. Repeat layers two more times.
  5. Pour beef broth over the entire casserole and cover with aluminum foil.  
  6. Bake for 1 hour and 15 minutes.
  7. Sprinkle with remaining coarse ground pepper and serve.

Optional Variation: For a cheesy twist, add shredded mozzarella cheese on top before baking.
