Ingredients:

Ingredients Amount
Active dry yeast (2 packets) 1 1/2 tablespoons
Warm water (110° to 120°F) 2 1/2 cups
Granulated sugar 2/3 cup
Unsalted butter, divided 8 tablespoons (1/2 cup)
Kosher salt 1 tablespoon
All-purpose flour 6-7 cups

Instructions:

  1. Activate the Yeast:
    • Combine warm water and granulated sugar in a large mixing bowl.
    • Sprinkle active dry yeast over the water and sugar mixture.
    • Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until the yeast is foamy and activated.
  2. Melt the Butter:
    • In a small saucepan, melt 6 tablespoons of unsalted butter over low heat.
    • Once melted, remove from heat and set aside to cool slightly.
  3. Mix the Dough:
    • Add melted butter and kosher salt to the activated yeast mixture. Stir to combine.
    • Gradually add 6 cups of all-purpose flour, one cup at a time, stirring well after each addition.
    • If the dough is too sticky, add additional flour, 1/4 cup at a time, until smooth and elastic.
  4. Knead the Dough:
    • Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface.
    • Knead the dough for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Shape into a ball.
  5. First Rise:
    • Place the dough ball in a greased bowl, turning once to coat.
    • Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap.
    • Allow the dough to rise in a warm, draft-free place for 1-2 hours until it doubles in size.
  6. Prepare the Loaf:
    • Once risen, gently punch down the dough to release air bubbles.
    • Divide the dough in half and shape each half into a loaf.
    • Place the loaves into greased 9×5-inch loaf pans.
  7. Second Rise:
    • Cover the loaf pans with a clean kitchen towel and let the dough rise for another 30-60 minutes until doubled in size.
  8. Preheat the Oven:
    • While the dough is rising, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  9. Bake the Bread:
    • Once risen, bake the loaves in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  10. Finish with Butter:
    • In the last few minutes of baking, melt the remaining 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter.
    • Brush the melted butter over the tops of the hot loaves as soon as they come out of the oven.
  11. Cool and Enjoy:
    • Allow the bread to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer them to wire racks to cool completely.
    • Slice and serve the bread warm with butter, jam, or your favorite toppings.
