Ingredients:

Ingredient Quantity
Fresh strawberries (hulled and halved) 1 cup
Granulated sugar 1 cup (or to taste)
Black tea bags 4 bags (preferably Orange Pekoe or robust black tea)
Water 1 gallon (divided)
Fresh mint leaves (for garnish) Optional
Lemon slices (for garnish) Optional

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Strawberry Syrup:
    • In a small pot, combine half a cup of water and the granulated sugar.
    • Heat over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves completely.
    • Add the fresh strawberries to the syrup and simmer for about 10 minutes until soft and color is released.
  2. Brew the Tea:
    • Bring 4 cups of water to a boil in a large pot.
    • Remove from heat and add the black tea bags.
    • Allow the tea bags to steep for 5-7 minutes, depending on desired strength.
    • Remove the tea bags and discard them.
  3. Combine and Chill:
    • Using a fine mesh strainer, strain the strawberry syrup into the brewed tea, pressing on the solids to extract liquid.
    • Add the remaining cold water to the tea and strawberry mixture.
    • Chill the tea in the refrigerator until thoroughly cold.
  4. Serve:
    • Once chilled, serve the Southern Strawberry Sweet Tea over ice.
    • Optionally, garnish with fresh mint leaves and lemon slices for added flavor and presentation.
